Physicians:

How Can We Help After You Diagnose a Chronic Illness?

Most physicians frequently face the unpleasant task of diagnosing chronic illnesses as part of their professional responsibility. Not only are you then in the position of having to provide medical information about these newly diagnosed illnesses, but you must deal with the patient’s inevitable emotional reaction. (This also applies to those having difficulty dealing with chronic illnesses they’re already living with.)

That’s where we can be of help.

For more than 35 years, one of our well-known specialties has been helping people cope with medical problems. We’ve helped many individuals with medical problems, ranging from those who were recently diagnosed, to those who have been living with their illnesses for a long period of time.

Our director, Dr. Robert H. Phillips, has presented over 500 papers, workshops, and addresses at organizations all over the world, and has written many books on the topic of coping with medical problems. (Further information about these presentations can be found at www.coping.com/presentations.)

Of course, there are times that it can be difficult to suggest that someone “seek help”. It can sound as though you think their symptoms are in their heads, or that they’re weak. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It takes strength to do whatever one can to help oneself live more successfully with a chronic medical problem.

Here’s are some suggestions:

  • Perhaps you could mention that a free consultation with us should be a routine part of dealing with this newly diagnosed chronic illness.
  • Let them know that often, when you diagnose someone with a chronic illness, you recommend that they work with our Coping Counselors to discuss how we can help them adjust to their life with their illness.
At this free appointment, we’ll discuss some of the issues people face when they’re living with a chronic illness, and discuss a plan for how we can help, using constructive, effective coping strategies. They’re under no obligation to continue to use our services.

In addition:
