What’s New?
Autumn…A Season for All Our Senses
People have mixed feelings about autumn. Many feel that after a long hot summer, they are ready to breathe in the cool, crisp fresh air and to feel and enjoy autumn’s seasonal changes. Others, however, are not ready for autumn, because it indicates that winter is coming. Let’s focus on the positives of autumn.
Autumn is a season for all five senses. The impact on each of the senses can help you to feel more energized and happy, which is so important for mental and physical well-being.
Autumn awakens the senses to see, hear, taste, feel, and smell what autumn has to offer to help and inspire to process emotions.
Here are some ways that autumn can touch your five senses
SEE
All the beautiful colors of gold and crimson leaves swirling around, fields of pumpkins, apple orchards, scenic rides in the country, the flickering flames from logs burning in the fireplace, the happy faces of family and friends gathering for holiday meals and more….
HEAR
The rustling sound of the wind gently blowing through the trees, the sound of laughter of family and friends as they gather for the holidays, the crunching sound of leaves under your feet as you walk, the crackling sound of flickering flames coming from the fireplace, and all the sounds of nature while hiking through the woods, and more…
TASTE
The delicious taste of seasonal comfort food, pumpkin, apple pie, delicious apple cider, apple cider donuts, candy apples, the bounty of delicious holiday meals, squash, hot chocolate with marshmallows, cranberries, sweet potatoes, turkey and more…
FEEL
The feel of the cool crisp air on your face lifting your spirit and giving you more energy, the warmth of the flickering flames from a fireplace on a chilly night, the feel of warm, cozy fall clothing, the anticipation of the upcoming holidays filling your mind with thoughts of delicious holiday meals, the hugs and kisses of family and friends, a time to reflect on the positives and to embrace all that autumn has to offer, any of these can evoke feelings of nostalgia and more….
SMELL
The smell of the fresh crisp autumn air, the warm comforting aroma of pumpkin pie baking in the oven, the smell of hot soup simmering on the stove, the warm aroma of logs burning in the fireplace, the aroma of warm comforting holiday meals evoking memories of the past to warm hearts and souls, and more…
There are countless autumn treasures filling each of our senses in more than one way, helping us to embrace, enjoy, and appreciate how much the seasonal change and life have to offer.
And so:
As we approach each new season, The Counselors at the Center for Coping publish an article pointing out the wonderful, positive aspects the season has to offer. We focus on the positive features to celebrate, rather than the negative, because it is healthier for your mental and physical well-being, and that is our goal for everyone. We may focus on the positive, but we will always acknowledge and understand (and will be here to help) those who have difficulty with seasonal changes.
Wishing you an autumn full of crisp fresh air, beautiful colors of gold and crimson, love, joy, health and happiness and all the beauty Mother Nature has to offer!
